The immune response of cattle to a crude extract of Boophilus microplus larvae was investigated in two groups of animals, one treated and one control. The treated group received three subcutaneous inoculations of 1 ml of the crude extract 21 days apart. In the first inoculation the extract was emulsinated with Freund's complete adjuvant, in the second with Freund's incomplete adjuvant and in the third no adjuvant was added. The control group received similar treatments with the extract being replaced by NaCI 0.15 M. Ten days after the last inoculation, each animal was challenged with estimated by measuring the number and weight of engorged females, the egg's weight and hatching percentage, which showed no differences. The bovine sera were analyzed by passive hemagglutination, double diffusion and immunoelectrophoresis before and after the antibodies were detected as an immune response to the crude precipitating antibodies were detected as an immune response to the crude extract. The treated group showed significante increase ( a < 0.01) in the levels of hemagglutinating antibodies after the treatment when compared to the control group. After the challenge, this difference disappreared. the precipitating antibodies showed similar patterns. Despite the presence of a humoral immune response, the antibodies did not protect the hosts to the challenge. |
